Plaque and calculus build up around your gums over time and lead to bleeding gums, tooth decay, and bad breath, and sometimes even losing your teeth! Regular exams and teeth cleanings prevent these from happening so you can live with a healthy, fresh mouth!

GUM DISEASE

It may have been a while since your teeth and gums got some care. Your gums seem to be bleeding when you floss or brush, and you’ve started to notice your breath is not what is should be. A deep cleaning (or scaling and root planing) might be in order. We use a dental laser that involves killing bacteria in the gums, which prevents inflammation and bleeding with a low power laser that doesn’t require anesthesia.

Plaque and tartar build up in and around and underneath your gum line if you let it. And some patients need cleanings more often. Deep cleanings help remove that hard or soft plaque and let the gums heal in the process – stopping

gum disease before it spreads.

HERE ARE SOME SIGNS OF GUM (i.e. PERIODONTAL) DISEASE:

Bleeding from brushing and flossing
Bone loss (black spaces between your teeth seen in the x-ray)
Gum pockets where bacteria gets stuck
Mouth odor that isn’t solved by listerine
Reddish, inflamed gums

What to Expect

45 minutes to 1.5 hours

Your dentist at Dr. Lui & Associates will start with a detailed examination of your gums and teeth so they can create a custom dental plan that meets your individual needs.

This will include:

Digital x-rays to detect decay between the teeth: 4 bite-wing x-ray, 1 panoramic x-ray (additional x-rays may be needed for diagnosis) and some Periapical (PA’s) of front teeth top and bottom
An oral cancer screening
Then a combination of hand instruments and ultrasonic scaler to carefully break up tartar and plaque that has built up under the gum line. Plus, we take at least 10 intraoral photos and use the diagnodent to detect cavities.

To wrap up, your hygienist will share what you need for home care between visits so future cleanings are effortless.
