A dental emergency can be inconvenient and painful, and we understand this at Dr. Lui & Associates. When this happens, we have extended hours and we’ll adjust our schedule to accommodate you!
CALL (403) 263-1346 (ext. 2)
Whatever happened to your teeth, you should be seen immediately! Call our dental office in downtown Calgary and we’ll try our best to treat you that day so you can feel better again.
Dental emergencies are nothing to joke about, so let’s review what is and what isn’t a dental emergency.
LOST TOOTH
Trauma hits when you least expect it: playing a sport, at the gym, or even banging into something at home! If your tooth falls out from one of these or other injury, our dentists at Dr. Lui & Associates recommend cleaning the root and if possible, replace the tooth right away. Research has shown that replacement within 30 minutes can give you a better chance of keeping your original tooth! You can also store your tooth in milk or your saliva (cheek) because these help sustain cells. Don’t wait for very long before you visit a dentist!
Losing a tooth requires immediate attention and our downtown Calgary dental team will do whatever it takes to squeeze you into our schedule to get you looked at.
BROKEN TOOTH
Thankfully, a broken molar won’t need an emergency appointment if you’re not in pain. In these cases, we can see you at our next opening (whew! Good news!).
DENTAL ABSCESS
A dental abscess may be caused by a number of different things, and symptoms can include pain, swelling, tenderness and throbbing. Seeing a dentist right away is important as an abscess can have serious implications. However, if you’re having trouble breathing, you should visit the hospital.
BROKEN OR LOST CROWNS
First, contact your dentist as soon as you can about your broken or lost crown. If we’re not available when you call, here’s what you can do in the meantime until we get you in:
Look at the affected area in the mirror. If you see if there are missing pieces from the tooth or a crown hanging loose, you’ll want to pull it off completely to avoid it being swallowed. If you rub your tongue over the tooth and it’s relatively smooth, it won’t require an emergency.
BROKEN BRACES
Braces wires can come undone for various reasons. Use the eraser on the end of a pencil to safely try pushing them back into place. If not, use orthodontic wax or a piece of gauze to cover up the broken end. Make sure to never cut the broken wires off with scissors since they can be swallowed. We can only smooth the wire. If it’s broken, you’ll need to contact your orthodontist.
30 MINUTES OR LONGER
We’ll only need to take 15 to 30 minutes to examine what’s going on during your emergency visit. We’ll use a dental x-ray machine to take photos of your affected area. The benefit of having multiple dentists on our team at Dr. Lui & Associates is that you get second opinions on what has happened and a thorough treatment plan for what’s next to get your teeth back on their feet!
At Dr Lui and Associates we devote ourselves to providing sophisticated, honest dental care for Calgarians and surrounding area. A referral isn’t necessary but sometimes a second opinion should be: simply book an appointment or call to get your free consultation.
